Yep, It’s a New Year.

Posted in Fitness and Ego-size, General Moosings at 12:53 pm by Gmoose

I hope everyone had a good holiday season.. now for you die-hard shoppers, remember that you only have 2 months until Easter.. better go stock up on more crap that no one needs in their house or in their diet.

Speaking of Diet and exercise. Know why diets fail? They don’t!!!! A diet is a cheapened word for a change of behavior that leads to healthier eating habits and a positive lifestyle change. People fail, not their “diets”. If you can’t stick to your eating plan or schedule, or lack the willpower to do so - go get help from a certified nutritionist. I’ve said it before and I’ll stick to my decision that it’s the right thing to do.

New pictures posted today (at the bottom of the fitness page –>). enjoy. Next photo upload schedule for first week of April, just prior to my first Triathlon of the year.

Here’s a difference a year can make.. mind you, I was not 100% dedicated to my workouts.

End of 2007 Update

Posted in Fitness and Ego-size, General Moosings at 11:02 pm by Gmoose

well here it is. that time of year again where I get to look forward and hope that everything I am doing now will pay off in the next 12.1 months
I’m more committed than ever to my physical self as I am starting to see some physical changes and my ability to lift x-amount of weight has increased drastically in the last 5 week (example: started with squats and 45-pound bar for 1 set of 12, now I’m squatting 85 pounds for 3 sets of 12 in just 5 weeks!)

and I’m still happy to report that I can still maintain an 11 min/mile pace- consistently. The shoulder I was afraid would need surgery now has 95% of the flexibility back, although I still have to be careful about over-extending it especially when lifting or holding something more than 15 pounds.

I just added another stats page in the Fitness and Ego-size area and I am planning on adding new progress photos this weekend.
hope everyone had a good holiday regardless of what or how you celebrate, and if you are among the billions celebrating the turn of the year, please be careful and plan to stay wherever you are going to party… I’ll be out running and don’t want to have to drag your drunk ass out of your car and beat you because you are to drunk to see me on the SIDEWALK!

2nd day of recovery

Posted in Fitness and Ego-size at 9:51 am by Gmoose

Monday morning I had my first session with the trainer.. WoW. In just one hour of an all body workout, we hit more muscle groups than I’ve ever done on my own. By the end of the hour I was in a state of total muscle failure.. My arms shaking so badly that I couldn’t hold on to my bottle of water. I knew it had been a good workout!

Tuesday morning: Woke up and I couldn’t stand up without assistance. Most of the day I hobbled around like a 90-year old with a walker… I also stood as much as possible. Squats took a serious toll on my legs and let me know just how out of shape I am.

Wednesday (today): Legs are still grumbling a bit. I hope after a good stretch I can get in some light legwork (lunges, etc) and then a short run to loosen up.

Yah! Hurts good :)

Round 2 - I asked for professional help

Posted in Fitness and Ego-size at 5:58 pm by Gmoose

With winter training and a clearer understanding of my fitness goals, I have come to a crossroads where I have to choose which is more important to train for; Strength, or Endurance. As much as I enjoy particpating in 3-sport events, there is still something missing. People I train with tell me that I should build base before I work on speed and that I shouldn’t do extensive weight training if I want to be a fast, lean triathlete. I agree.. I need base work, all over.

I’ve learned a lot in the past 12 months, had some fun, a few minor injuries, and found a greater appreciation for people who are dedicated to their sport and fitness. I understand the basics of what makes a person tick and I have identified several interests. I am at the point where I have a good amount of information, but I’m having trouble putting it all together on my own. My two biggest weaknesses have become apparent to me and I know I can’t deal with it alone… So, I hired a Personal Trainer and a nutrionist. I workout out twice a week with my trainer, and once on my own. The days I’m not lifting, I’ll be swimming and running (taking one day a week off).

want to win the NY Marathon??

Posted in Fitness and Ego-size, General Moosings at 4:10 pm by Gmoose

I was flipping through the 4 TV channels I get and happened upon the last mile of this years’ NY Marathon. Watching on the edge of my seat as 2 top ranked Kenyans come down the last stretch shoulder to shoulder until the front runner takes off and disappears down the chute winning the Men’s Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 5 seconds.

Think about this for a moment. 26.2 miles in just over 2 hours… on foot.

my fast pace is roughly 11 min/mile. It would take about 4 hrs and 45min to travel the same distance providing I was prepared go that far (without walking).

Keto? kato? kitty, what?

Posted in General Moosings at 3:42 pm by Gmoose

nutrition is probably the hardest thing for anyone to fully grasp as the very basics may be the same, and many of the theories are going to be similar, every person responds to diet and nutrition in a different way. Recently I’ve managed to get lost in a slew of online thoughts and comments in regards to “carb cycling” and even worse “ketogenic” diets. Both of which claim to be able to shred body fat in a very short amount of time. I personally am not prepared to go to the extremes of cutting out all my carbs for even a short amount of time, nor do I think that eating a high-fat diet for an extended amount of time can be healthy in the long run.. sure, you may drop your bodyfat % quickly, but you may also drop over dead when your arteries clog up and explode.

Unless you are a whiz in human biology, or you know someone who is and also can identify any health issues that you may have that would affect a diet plan, I suggest you spend a paycheck and go find yourself a recommended sports nutrionist or registered dietician to get the full benefit of what a proper diet/eating lifestyle change can do for you.

Word of the day: Sick-Sense (knowing you are about to puke or faint from lack of proper nutrition)
[which is not to be confused with Sixpence (none the richer)]

Added Page

I’ve put together a page of all the events I’ve participated (and finished, mind you) in since February of this year (2007).
the page title is Completed Athletic Events and it can be found just under the About Me page on the right side of your screen.

Nap time

Posted in General Moosings at 12:06 pm by Gmoose

one of the most important things you can do for yourself is (a) devote 7-8 hours to uninterrupted sleep (I know you can’t do it if you are a parent or have a job that requires you to be on-call 24/7), and sneak in a short nap a couple of times a day. Especially if you are working out- your body needs the time to repair itself and recharge.

Wedgie what?

How about a couple of hundred to choose from?
could it be any more confusing? Why, YES… Yes it can.
this is one of those times that you have to do your own research and find out what works for you, what is complete BS, and if nothing else kill some time looking at link after link after link, etc.
I was just looking for a simple km to mi chart and ran into all of these parked on Runner’s Web of Widgets.

Tying it together

Posted in Fitness and Ego-size at 10:14 pm by Gmoose

The farther along in the day it got, the harder it was to do simple tasks like walk, get in or out of vehicles, squats to look at something on the bottom shelf of the market (where the “healthier” food is), etc.

I was originally scheduled to do a 40 min run. I’ve been doing my triathlon training runs on an 8 min run, 2 min walk pace which seems to be working out well for me. So anyway, tonight I limped out the door and had a nice brisk 1/2 block warm-up walk (as usual), and then proceeded to run.
When I got to the 40 min mark, my legs felt sooo good that I didn’t want to stop! All the muscles were working together and I could actually feel the different sections firing as my feet hit the pavement. I ended up running an extra 25 mins and put my time and 6 miles in 1:12:49. This is a good time for me considering that the last time I “ran my ass off” for an 1:15:00, I went 10k (or just a hair over 6 miles).

I’m still a little sore overall, but it feels awesome :)

If it walks like a duck… it must be me!

Friday I did a complete legs workout with very little weight.
This workout basically consisted of doing 5 different style of lunges, and 5 styles of squats followed immediately by core/ab work.
The most weight I used was 10 lbs.. and that was only for 3 exercises, yet well over 300 reps.

When I got done I thought to myself, “Self, that wasn’t hard enough- I don’t feel sore anywhere at all.”
TODAY, it was, “Self.. I can hardly walk I hurt so much. I feel like I was hit by a truck and repeatedly backed over”

One must remember that with leg work, one engages stability muscles AND already is lifting, twisting, using your body weight. Anything you add on top of that is just that much more. I would strongly suggest that if you have not done leg work prior to starting this workout, that you do NOT use extra weights your first week.

Limitations

Posted in Fitness and Ego-size, General Moosings at 9:59 am by Gmoose

another hard workout yesterday. I ran out of time because of having class all day and pulling an all-nighter (won’t be doing that again any time soon).
I did all my workouts back to back (run, strength, abs) even though I knew better- I had to get it done.
I had a good, short 3 mile run. As soon as I got back I made up a 20 bottle of Gatorade and jumped into my weights.
Not sure what the deal with my shoulder is.. I can do straight-arm flys to the front and the side but when I tried to do seated flys I thought someone had stabbed me in the shoulder with something hot and pointy. I thought it was the weight and dropped it down to 5 lbs, but that was just as bad. Apparently I have limited range of motion that may need the assistance of a Physical Therapist.

The only two movements that over-stress the upper-body is the above mentioned seated shoulder flys and any overhand grip pull-ups (I can do a few assisted, but full body hang is a bad idea for now)
